Last night saw the Mutual lose their unbeaten start to 2011 with a below bar performance against York Allstars.
The evening got off to a bad start when playmaker Neil Sanderson was struck with a late and unexpected yet severe bout of Arsenalvsleedsisontheteleitis, which led him to miss out. Moments later, goalkeeper Tristan Fayers, rang to report that his car was failing to start and that he was going to be late. Luckily, the goalkeeping younger brother of Sam Outing, Tommy, had come down to take match and profile pictures for the website and was quite literally on hand to don the gloves stand between the sticks.
NFUM again started slowley, and struggled to get much posses ion. Dave Roberts and Mark Brooks though gave little away at the back and the tie soon became a scrappy affair with little fluency to either side's play. A quick kick-in from Tom Hudson enabled Sam to get a shot away but although powerful it was straight at the opposition goalkeeper, and failed to trouble him. An otherwise uneventful first half came to an end with Tristan running from the Huntington car park and straight into the goal, he was called into action almost immediately when he was forced to make a save down to his left from the Allstars striker. Unfortunately his next task was to pick the ball out the net, as some uncharacteristic sloppy defending gifted the Allstars the games opening goal. The Mutual, whilst working hard, were short of any creative spark and failed to test the goalkeeper. Tom Hudson had a half chance to equalise, but after rounding the 'keeper he could only find the side netting from a near impossible angle. The opponents rallied, and were gifted a second goal moments later when they broke to seal the victory with 2 minutes remaining.
Thankfully the referee soon brought an end to a fairly miserable evening by ending the game.
Next up is Clifton FC, who remain unbeaten and are currently second in the table.

NFU Mutual 1-0 Chef United.
NFUM last night preserved their unbeaten start to 2011 with a hard-fought win against seventh placed Chef United.
The Mutual started slowly and struggled to get much early possession against opposition who had already proved to be hard to break down in the seasons reverse fixture between the two sides, which ended 0-0. David Roberts kept United at bay with some trademark tough defending, as NFUM continued to gift this possession.
Neat build up play from the back sent Tom Hudson forward who played a pinpoint ball in behind the opposing defence, for Sam Outing only to find the side netting with a left footed half volley. The same pair then combined again to set up what proved to be the only goal of the game, when a simple line ball was met by Outing who sent a left footed cross into the back post where Tom Toulson, under pressure from the last defender, smashed in a Van-Basten-esque volley from 10yards.
This finally sparked the blacks into life, and from that point the team never really looked back. The second half saw further chances - with Neil Sanderson forcing an acrobatic save from the Chef Utd 'keeper, and Tom Hudson placing a free kick inches wide of the far post after being felled on the edge of the area - but little in the way of threat from the opposing attack.
This latest victory moves the side further up the league, with bottom of the league and goalless York Allstars to play next Wednesday.

Huntington Sports Club 0-3 NFU Mutual
NFUM returned to action last night following the recent bad weather and festivities with a comfortable 3-0 victory over mid-table Huntington Sports Club.
The Mutual started the game strongest and created ample opportunities to put the game out of sight by half-time, but were clearly suffering from some post-christmas rustiness. Sam and Tom.H both saw efforts rattle the frame of the goal, as they got closer and closer to the goal they needed. Neil then opened the scoring midway through the first half, hitting a low near post drive past the Huntington Goalie. The second half was much the same, with almost every player guilty of missing some good chances, Sam managing to put his strike out for a throw in and Tom.T blasting over from close range.
Some good link up play from Adrian and Dave set Sam free down the right who laid the ball on a plate for Neil to make in 2-0 five minutes from time. Huntington rarely threatened, but in their one late effort of note, Tristan managed to stay alert for his only real save of the game to keep his fourth clean sheet of the season. In the dying seconds NFUM broke and again Adrian set Sam free who put some gloss on the victory with a almost identical goal to the first, this time from the left. This proved to be the last kick of the game, and the Blacks move up to 5th in the League, with a game in hand still to play against lowly El Salmon FC.
