NFU Mutal 1-0 El Salmon.

 - A first half penalty from midfielder Tom Hudson was enough to secure the three points (Pictured). -

NFUM Returned to winning ways last night with a 1-0 over El Salmon.

The Mutual made several changes to the team that lost to second place Clifton FC last week, with Tristan Fayers, Neil Sanderson and Tom Hudson returning to the side and Adam White making his first appearance in over 6 months.  Sam Outing covered for the absent Dave Roberts at the back, with Tom Toulson, Mark Brooks and Adrian Campion being the only others to make consecutive appearances.

NFU started brightly, and managed to keep possesion in the opening minutes of the game, with Tristan, Sam and 'Brooksie' rarely troubled by the opposition attack.  Tom.T and Adrian linked up well early on to set Mark Brooks up on the left, but the Marouanne Fellaini double could only blast wide.  Adrian immediately received the ball from the goalkeepers throw out, and beat three men before scuffing a shot into the goalies arms.

Attacking duo Neil and Adam came on half way into the first half, and continued to link up well, as they had in previous seasons.  The impact was almost instant, as Adam was obstructed whilst trying to get his shot away by the last defender - unfortunately for said defender, he was 2 feet in his own area, and a penalty was awarded without hesitation.  Normal penalty taker Neil let Tom.H have the penalty after the midfielder's pre-match prediction that "tonight was his night for a goal".....    He wasn't wrong as he cooly placed the penalty to the 'keepers right.

The game soon became a scrappy affair, with El Salmon continuously breaking up play with some often cynical challenges.  In one of the less fluent second halves of football that NERO will ever play only two chance of note were created, Neil blasting over after good build up from a corner, and Tom.T failing to connect properly with a well picked out through ball.  A late El Salmon rally was fruitless as NFUM held on for all three points, which moves them up to 3rd in the league with a game in hand.

York Allstars 2-0 NFU Mutual

Last night saw the Mutual lose their unbeaten start to 2011 with a below bar performance against York Allstars.

The evening got off to a bad start when playmaker Neil Sanderson was struck with a late and unexpected yet severe bout of Arsenalvsleedsisontheteleitis, which led him to miss out.  Moments later, goalkeeper Tristan Fayers, rang to report that his car was failing to start and that he was going to be late.  Luckily, the goalkeeping younger brother of Sam Outing, Tommy, had come down to take match and profile pictures for the website and was quite literally on hand to don the gloves stand between the sticks.

NFUM again started slowley, and struggled to get much posses ion.  Dave Roberts and Mark Brooks though gave little away at the back and the tie soon became a scrappy affair with little fluency to either side's play.  A quick kick-in from Tom Hudson enabled Sam to get a shot away but although powerful it was straight at the opposition goalkeeper, and failed to trouble him.  An otherwise uneventful first half came to an end with Tristan running from the Huntington car park and straight into the goal, he was called into action almost immediately when he was forced to make a save down to his left from the Allstars striker.  Unfortunately his next task was to pick the ball out the net, as some uncharacteristic sloppy defending gifted the Allstars the games opening goal.  The Mutual, whilst working hard, were short of any creative spark and failed to test the goalkeeper.  Tom Hudson had a half chance to equalise, but after rounding the 'keeper he could only find the side netting from a near impossible angle.  The opponents rallied, and were gifted a second goal moments later when they broke to seal the victory with 2 minutes remaining.
Thankfully the referee soon brought an end to a fairly miserable evening by ending the game.

Next up is Clifton FC, who remain unbeaten and are currently second in the table.

NFU Mutual 1-0 Chef United.

NFUM last night preserved their unbeaten start to 2011 with a hard-fought win against seventh placed Chef United.

The Mutual started slowly and struggled to get much early possession against opposition who had already proved to be hard to break down in the seasons reverse fixture between the two sides, which ended 0-0. David Roberts kept United at bay with some trademark tough defending, as NFUM continued to gift this possession.
Neat build up play from the back sent Tom Hudson forward who played a pinpoint ball in behind the opposing defence, for Sam Outing only to find the side netting with a left footed half volley. The same pair then combined again to set up what proved to be the only goal of the game, when a simple line ball was met by Outing who sent a left footed cross into the back post where Tom Toulson, under pressure from the last defender, smashed in a Van-Basten-esque volley from 10yards.
This finally sparked the blacks into life, and from that point the team never really looked back. The second half saw further chances - with Neil Sanderson forcing an acrobatic save from the Chef Utd 'keeper, and Tom Hudson placing a free kick inches wide of the far post after being felled on the edge of the area - but little in the way of threat from the opposing attack.

This latest victory moves the side further up the league, with bottom of the league and goalless York Allstars to play next Wednesday.
